Around Australia 2012 for the record
SAILING 6,500 MILES AGAINST THE CLOCK
The 'Around Australia Non-Stop Record Attempt' will take its single monohull challenger through all weather conditions from the hot tropical waters of Northern Australia to the chills of the "roaring forties" in the Southern Ocean providing some of the most spectacular coastal scenery on our planet as the background to a formidable challenge of seamanship, endurance and exhilaration.
The 'Around Australia Non-Stop Record Attempt' is an Australian speed and distance record attempt starting from Sydney. Our vessel will follow the anti-clock wise direction that will take us pass the Cape Byron, Great Barrier Reef, through the Torres Strait, across Golf of Carpentaria, pass Cape Van Diemen, North-West Cape, Cape Leeuwin, across Great Australian Bight and the Southern Ocean toward South East Cape, across Bass Strait and the Tasman Sea to return back to Sydney within the new target of 25 days non-stop sailing.
Multihull & monohull records will be challenged.
The new monohull record has been just set! 37 days, 1 hour, 23 minutes, 07 seconds sailing (25 May - 1 July 2003) on board 'KAZ' (53.15 ft - 16.20 m) fully crewed by "sailors with disABILITIES" skippered by David Pescud and is ratified by the World Sailing Speed Record Council.
The original fully crewed monohull record was set during September-October 1999. An Open 60 'Magna Data' (60 ft - 18.29 m) skippered by Jeremy Pearce took 43 days 19 hours 29 minutes 55 seconds.
The current solo monohull record has been set by Ian "Thommo" Thomson sailing on board Welbourne designed 12 m yacht "Save Our Seas" during May - June 2010 in 42 days 5 hours 30 minutes 2 seconds. Although Ian had to make an emergency pitt-stop along the way.
The original and still current solo monohull non-stop unassisted record set during July-October 1990 stands at 68 days 8 hours 30 minutes and is held by 'Skaffie II' (35 ft - 10.67 m) skippered by David Beard.
The solo non-stop female record currently open for challengers.
Although in October 2005 Margaret Williams attempted to set the solo non-stop female record on board 'Against All Odds' (40 ft - 12.19 m), but sadly her journey due to technical problems with the yacht's steering system her voyage ended at Albany (Western Australia). On 2 June 2006 Margaret Williams resumed her challenge starting from Fremantle in (Western Australia). Due to technical problems she had to call into Townsville (Queensland) on 17 July for repairs. Here she is evaluating possibility of another attempt for the solo non-stop female record sailing around Australia.
The multihull fully crewed record of 17 days 12 hours 57 minutes 5 seconds (ratified by the WSSRC) was set in July 2005 by the French mega trimaran 'Geronimo' sponsored by Cap Gemini Ernest &Young - Schneider Electric (110 ft - 34.00 m); designed by Van Peteghem Lauriot Prévost (VPLP); built by Multiplast; skippered by Olivier de Kersauson, this is the largest and probably the most powerful trimaran in the world!
The multihull solo record has never been attempted and is currently open for prospective challengers.

Against the WIND & TIME - "Racing the Latitudes to Change Attitudes" - a major medical trauma, long term illness or a dissability does not constitute an end to your life, it may just be a beginning of an new adventure. There are still abilities within you to contribute to your family and the society in general. Through my record challenge I plan to prove that even the so called impossible dreams are in everyone's grasp. You do not have to sail around the world to prove it, just go and take hold of your dream. Experience the joy it will bring you and people around you and prove to those that doubted what you can do.
"... Second chance man: Despite his battles with illness, Sydney yachtie John Rich believes global circumnavigation deserves more then one attempt. ..."
Jane-Anne Lee, Journalist, The Bulletin
"Sailing the Southern Ocean ... the roughest conditions in ocean yacht racing. Some call it crazy. Others see it as a challenge... One of those rare opportunities in life ... unforgetable."
Paul Cayard, American Yachtsman and Professional Sailor

JUST FOR THE RECORD!
Around the World, westbound (wrong-way) - the World Sailing Speed Record Council http://www.sailspeedrecords.com/ has set a rule 26a.
"To sail around the World, a vessel must start from and return to the same point, must cross all meridians of longitude and must cross the Equator. It may cross some but not all meridians more than once (i.e. two roundings of Antarctica do not count). The shortest orthodromic track of the vessel must be at least 21,600 nautical miles in length calculated based on a 'perfect sphere'. In calculating this distance, it is to be assumed that the vessel will sail around Antarctica in latitude 63 degrees south. A vessel starting in the Southern Hemisphere has to round an island or other fixed point in the Northern Hemisphere but only once that will satisfy the minimum distance requirement."
